On a royal research mission, the Endeavour commanded by Lieutenant James Cook set out on a voyage of discovery down under in the late eighteenth century.
Leaving Plymouth at breakfast, round the Cape by lunch, a quick call to Tahiti for tea and into unchartered waters for some supper time adventures, claiming Oz for HM by breakfast and home in time to watch Home and Away by 7. Okay not quite to scale but probably how the crew felt by the time they reached terra firma in Botany Bay, just beside Sydney international airport and ready for the flight back to ol blighty. .
Actually, not quite how it ended. Someone put the Great Barrier Reef in the way and the Endeavour had to limp to Jakarta (a little quieter then than today) all aboard (man and rat) sworn to secrecy about the wonders of their trip, a short hop across the Cape into Dover as one does over the Christmas break and hey ho only 3 years since leaving jolly old England. .
A somewhat less illustrious but no less busy retirement, to and from the Falkland Islands. ferrying troops for the American Revolution this mighty ship ended its days in bits in Rhode Island as Independence Day fireworks exploded in the background. .
Fast forward 200 years and today the replica Endeavour happily snuggles down to a life of entertainment to the many visitors enthralled by her beauty and stories. Well manned and womanned with volunteer guides who relish in tall and small tales of crew squabbles, men overboard, cats of nine tails and sea dogs (no cats or women). Enjoy the craftsmanship in her construction, such symmetry, comfy cabins, class separations and marvel at the disciplined life led by all on board. A hammock for me I think. A fitting host to the magnificent Master and Commander movie, ably led by Russell Crowe in such dangerous weather. Enjoy at least one afternoons pleasure amongst the many treasures of Sydney Harbour. All aboard! .
Afterwards you can tell some tall tales of your own in any of the
